Week 1 Preview

West Point’s Will Cochran throws a pass during last week’s game against Fairview.

Week 0 has officially come and gone.

And I hope everyone enjoyed the return of high school football as much as I did.

However, there is no time to waste — not with an exciting slate of Week 1 games awaiting us.

So why not jump right into it?

Before we begin, though, remember to cast your vote in "The People's Pick," a series of Twitter polls posted on my timeline (@winfreyjake) each and every Monday afternoon.

Time for some predictions.

Class 2A, No. 3 Addison (1-0) at Class 3A, No. 2 Piedmont (0-0): How about this Week 1 clash?

The battle of the Bulldogs should be one of the better games in the state on Friday night with a pair of potential title contenders squaring off on the gridiron.

Addison built a 20-8 lead against Piedmont last season before eventually losing 32-20.

Coach Steve Smith's program is 53-6 since 2015 and finished runner-up in Class 3A last fall following a 23-12 loss to Flomaton in the championship game.

Addison, meanwhile, is 34-7 since 2016 and is hoping to dish out some payback on the road.

% My Pick: Piedmont

% People's Pick: Addison (63 percent — 156 votes)

Class 2A Cold Springs (1-0) at Class 1A Berry (0-1): The Eagles took down Meek last week 25-0.

The Wildcats, on the other hand, lost to Sulligent 33-8 in Week 0 and now must face a Cold Springs group that's no doubt brimming with confidence following its first shutout since 2015.

The road team should pick up the win here.

% My Pick: Cold Springs

% People's Pick: Cold Springs (86 percent — 99 votes)

Class 6A Cullman (0-1) at Class 5A, No. 10 Mortimer Jordan (0-1): Talk about a tough Week 0 for these two squads.

The Bearcats lost a close contest to Class 5A, No. 3 Jasper 21-19, while the Blue Devils were turned away at the goal line late in a 32-25 loss to Pleasant Grove.

Mortimer Jordan slipped past Cullman 18-16 in 2018 on a late field goal.

The Bearcats, however, lead the all-time series 12-3-1.

One of the keys to this game could be how well Cullman slows down quarterback Kourtlan Marsh.

According to the North Jefferson News, the standout senior accounted for 293 total yards and three touchdowns last week.

Don't be surprised if this one goes down to the wire.

% My Pick: Cullman

% People's Pick: Mortimer Jordan (53 percent — 173 votes)

Class 4A Fairview (0-1) at Class 3A Hanceville (1-0): It's our second county vs. county tilt of 2019.

The Aggies fell to West Point 14-8 last week, while the Bulldogs needed overtime to outlast Sumiton Christian 32-26 in their season opener.

Hanceville leads the all-time series 29-14, but Fairview has earned three straight wins — including a 32-22 victory in 2018 — over the Bulldogs by an average of 15.6 points.

I'll be covering this game personally, and I'm not sure what's going to happen.

The quarter *flip* has spoken.

% My Pick: Fairview

% People's Pick: Fairview (73 percent — 116 votes)

Class 4A Priceville (0-0) at Class 4A Good Hope (1-0): No need for a deep breakdown of this one.

The Raiders beat Carbon Hill 28-9 last week and looked quite good doing it.

Priceville, meanwhile, has only one winning season since 2008 and fell to Good Hope 47-14 in 2018.

I'll take the home team here.

% My Pick: Good Hope

% People's Pick: Good Hope (84 percent — 114 votes)

Class 2A Ider (0-0) at Class 3A Holly Pond (0-1): The Broncos lost their season opener for the first time since 2015 last week following a 44-30 defeat at the hands of New Hope.

Holly Pond has faced the Hornets just once — a 36-13 road victory last season.

With a game under their belt, I tend to think the Broncos will bounce back at home on Friday night.

Just in time to build some momentum ahead of their region opener.

% My Pick: Holly Pond

% People's Pick: Holly Pond (66 percent — 108 votes)

Class 3A Vinemont (0-0) at Class 1A Falkville (1-0): Here's another Week 1 toss-up.

The Blue Devils recorded a 32-28 road win against the Eagles en route to an 11-win season in 2018.

Vinemont fell to East Lawrence 10-7 in a jamboree last week, while Falkville squeaked past Danville on the road 28-21.

So what does that all mean?

I'm not sure.

And that means I'm going with my gut.

I thought Vinemont would win this game two weeks ago, and I'm not going to change my mind now.

% My Pick: Vinemont

% People's Pick: Falkville (58 percent — 106 votes)

Class 5A West Point (1-0) at Class 5A Arab (1-0): Here's yet another Week 1 toss-up.

The Warriors overcame a 19-point deficit in 2018 to pull out a 27-26 home triumph versus the Knights.

Arab, under new head coach Lee Ozmint, kicked off the season with a 28-21 win over Boaz last week.

However, the Knights committed numerous penalties and allowed 224 rushing yards.

Another close call here — just look at The People's Pick.

The quarter *flip* has spoken once again.

% My Pick: Arab

% People's Pick: Split (124 votes — 50/50 percent)

% My Record: 6-2

% People's Record: 5-3
