Randy Daniel is a volleyball coach who has steadily moved up in the world of the AHSAA coaching ranks over the last nine years.

He spent six years coaching at Winston County High School before going to Sparkman for two years and Spain Park last year.

Daniel will be making another move up, but out of the high school ranks this time.

He was hired as the new volleyball coach at Wallace State Community College this week.

Daniel said making the move to Wallace State was something he wanted to do.

“I’ve always wanted to coach volleyball in college, and I was glad to get this chance,” Daniel said. “What I liked about Wallace State is that I am from Winston County, so it was close to home.”

Daniel said he expects coaching at the JUCO level to be different from coaching at the Class 6A high school level, but he thinks he is ready for it.

“I coached at Sparkman and against the very good schools that are in the Huntsville area like Grissom, Bob Jones and Huntsville High,” Daniel said. “While coaching at Spain Park, I coached some good players and against some very good teams in the Birmingham area.

“A lot of those girls moved on to the collegiate level, so there are good indications in those areas what college volleyball is like because those are the types of players colleges want.”

Daniel said he is already familiar with some of the girls on the team through various connections throughout volleyball in north Alabama.

“I don’t know a lot of the girls, but some of them I am familiar with and others I have known for years,” Daniel said. “I am excited about the talent that is on the team.”

Daniel said he has options to add to the team’s talent level.

“We have a few spots open on the roster, so one of the first things I am going to do is hit the recruiting trail hard for some good players that can help out,” Daniel said. “Once we get those in place, I plan on being competitive in the conference.

“I want to win every game we play, because I hate to lose and I want that kind of player as well.”
