Darrell Haley has been a champion of the Senior Championship at Terri Pines Country Club, and he can add another championship to his trophy case: 2006 Cullman County Senior Open champion.

The championship did not come without some adversity as Haley’s second day ended with a 74 being posted next to his name on the leaderboard.

He went into the day’s play with a four-shot lead over second-place Bob Kurtz after shooting a 67 on Saturday.

While Kurtz’s Sunday score of 72 was good enough to close the gap between him and Haley, it was not enough to put the former Senior Open champion in the lead as Haley won by two shots.

In the 50-59 age division, Tommy Byrd and Ed Calvert played to a tie at 148.

Calvert actually entered Sunday’s play with a one-stroke lead over Byrd, but Byrd came back to tie as Bo Blackwell, who began the day tied with Calvert for the division lead fell of the pace and finished two shots back at 150.

Tournament director and Cullman Golf Course head professional Ches Harris said the tournament was another good one to watch.

“Darrell had a good lead coming into the second round, but Pastor Bob came back to make a game of it,” Harris said. “That just shows how competitive this tournament is.”

Harris added the Senior Open will probably move to May of next year.
