Local veterans will be honored this Saturday at the annual Cullman County Veterans Celebration at Sportsman Lake Park.
The Cullman Elks Lodge 1609 plans and conducts the celebration every year with donations from the Cullman City and Cullman County governments, the Cullman County Community Development Commission and local businesses.
This year’s event will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and admission is free. Free parking and a free shuttle service will also be available for those who attend.
Several exhibits will be open all day, including displays of Vietnam-era military equipment, from soldiers’ gear to a UH-1 “Huey” helicopter, along with other military vehicles from other eras.
Other displays include World War II British military equipment, a Civil War living history camp with the Sons of Confederates Veterans and cannons,
As a special guest, Gen. Bob Stewart, a Vietnam helicopter pilot and NASA space shuttle pilot will also be on hand.
Guides will be also be present to help visitors locate names on the Alabama Vietnam Veterans Wall.
Here is a schedule of the day’s events:
8:30 a.m. - Venue opens with USO Canteen serving free coffee and donuts to veterans and the Sons of Liberty ride in to salute veterans.
9 a.m. - Opening ceremony with prayer, national anthem and VIP introductions.
9:15 a.m. - Free concert by the Cullman Community Band at pavilion.
10 a.m. - Free concert by Letters from Home at pavilion.
11:30 a.m. - Elks serve free lunch to veterans and spouses, with food vendors available for the public.
1 p.m. - Free concert by Madison Rising at Fairgrounds Theater.
