A homicide investigation is underway after a Monday evening shooting left two people dead and another in intensive care.
CCSO confirms Matthew LeWayne Clayton is being held in the Limestone County Jail as a person of interest.
At approximately 5:30 p.m. Monday, a 911 call was made from a residence on County Road 223 in the Prospect Mountain community. The caller said a shooting, or stabbing, had occurred. Arriving on the scene, deputies found one person dead and two others injured.
Cullman County Coroner Jeremy Kilpatrick confirmed the victim who died at the scene was a male. The victim's names haven't been released.
Cullman EMS transported two victims to an area hospital where one died.
Local law enforcement coordinated with Alabama State Troopers (ALEA) and the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office to locate and detain a person of interest who was seen traveling north on Interstate 65. After multiple calls for reckless driving that ended in a crash, Clayton was taken into custody.
Gentry said there is no danger to the local community and CCSO will provide more details in the coming days.
