GOOD HOPE — The Good Hope City Council approved the appointment of a new city councilman at Monday night’s meeting.
Terry Shabel will join the council for the remainder of Councilman Johnny Harris’ term. Harris passed away in August. Shabel will be sworn in at a later date.
“I believe he will be a lot of help to the city,” said Councilman Maxie Jones, who nominated Shabel.
In other business, Councilman Greg Brown announced a new opportunity for Good Hope seniors.
Brown said the new Sizzlin’ Seniors group will host its first event Tuesday, Oct. 15, in the basement at city hall beginning at 10 a.m. with bingo and door prizes. BBQ sandwiches will be served at 11:30 a.m.
“We’ve been working hard on it and I think it’ll be good for the seniors,” Brown said.
As a special treat for the inaugural event, local painter Karen McCluskey will lead seniors in painting a fall door hanger beginning at 1 p.m.
After the first meeting, the Sizzlin’ Seniors will meet every second and fourth Tuesday of the month, with special trips planned every other month.
Any senior who is interested in attending the group’s activities should RSVP to the city by calling 256-739-3757.
