Veterans Day isn’t until next week, but no one who showed up to Sportsman Lake’s Veterans Park on Saturday for a day filled with music, friendship, and perfect weather was likely to notice.
Under blue skies on a crisp fall day, the park rang out with music in honor of local veterans of every stripe. A ride-in from the Sons of Liberty and salute to veterans helped kick off the day, which featured re-enactors in period dress recalling the fashion of the WWII era.
Sponsored by Cullman Elks Lodge, the event featured music from the Cullman Community Band, Letter From Home, and Madison Rising, and served up free food to local vets and their families.
Organizers always plan the event for the Saturday that precedes Veterans Day, freeing up the county’s approximately 7,000 veterans to attend other events in Huntsville and Birmingham on Veterans Day weekend. The Elks Lodge stages the celebration each year with support from the City of Cullman, the Cullman County Commission, the Cullman County Community Development Commission, and area businesses.
