We’re not quite in the home stretch for the start of spring planting, but the North Alabama Agriplex already is turning one eye toward picking up some handy gardening habits while we’re waiting for the weather to turn warm.
On Saturday, Feb. 8 the Agriplex will host a half-day session (with lunch included) on organic and natural gardening as part of its Heritage Skills series. From 9 a.m. until 2 p.m., follow along as experts and local farmers highlight best practices for natural growing. Come ready to learn about natural methods for controlling insects, local soils, cover crops, rain catchments, sustainability methods, and more.
Here’s how the rest of the February calendar is shaping up at the Agriplex:
Feb. 13 — Learn to Sew! Hemming, mending, & other hand sewing skills at 6 p.m.
Tired of paying for simple mends? Learn how to measure and cut for hemming by machine and by hand instead! Pick up skills on how to sew buttons and other easy fabric mending projects. Cost is $5 per person.
Feb. 14 — Little Farmers Preschool Farm: Hoppy Valentine’s Day from 10 to 11 a.m.
Celebrate Valentine’s Day at the Agriplex with something green. Come see the life cycle of frogs up close and make some new froggy friends. Cost is $5 per child and $10 maximum for families of two or more.
Feb. 19 — Lunch & Learn: Trees & Shrubs for Arbor Day Tree Sale with Tony Glover from 12 to 1 p.m.
Lunch & Learn is a free, bring-your-own-lunch program with door prizes at each event. February’s topic is Arbor Day — or really Arbor “week,” since in Alabama the tree celebration falls during the last full week of February each year. Call 256-297-1044 to reserve your seat — and be sure to pack a lunch.
Feb. 27 — Heritage Homeschool: A Gee’s Bend Quilters from 9 to 11 a.m.
Celebrated Alabama Gee’s Bend Quilters will tell the story of their art and teach about their nationally-acclaimed history. Storytelling, songs, and a quilt show-and-tell will all be a part of this one-of-a-kind program. Cost is $8 per child and $16 per family.
