A Cullman woman was struck and killed by a vehicle while riding her bicycle along St. Joseph Drive Northwest Monday night, Cullman police said.
Authorities identified the victim as 67-year-old Benita Diane Burks Gunter. The wreck occurred shortly before 6:16 p.m near Ragsdale Road. Gunter was rushed to Cullman Regional Medical Center by ambulance but later died en route to UAB Medical Center, said Cullman Assistant Police Chief Craig Green.
"Based on what we know now, this was just an unfortunate tragedy," Green said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim's friends and family as well as with the driver of the vehicle. We don't believe the driver is at fault. The victim was not wearing any reflective clothing or a helmet and didn't have a light on her bicycle."
The driver of the vehicle was identified as Zachary Tyler Woods of Cullman. Police said Woods was not speeding or following too closely, and they do not suspect any foul play at this time. Sgt. Jeff Warnke is investigating the traffic fatality.
