2nd Fridays

2nd Fridays, seen July 12, always packs Cullman’s streets with people, pets and plenty of classic cars.

A doubleheader event Friday will join Celebrate Cullman and 2nd Fridays in a seven-block evening of entertainment for all ages.

With Cullman Parks, Recreation & Sports Tourism and the Cullman Area Chamber of Commerce sponsoring 2nd Fridays, and the Cullman Downtown Merchants Association joining the festivities with Celebrate Cullman, area residents and visitors can expect plenty of food, drinks, rides, music and shopping from 5-9:30 p.m.

The twin events will cover downtown Cullman’s entertainment district with activities planned throughout the district.

The blocks south of U.S. 278 encompass Celebrate Cullman, with numerous rides, including a new tea cup ride, the return of the pirate ships, slides and others.

Merchants association member Ron Pierce said the activities are free and free prizes are available.

“You get tickets for going on the rides and playing the games, and then you take the tickets to the prize tent for free prizes,” Pierce said. “We do this to give back to our community for all the support they give to local businesses, and to continue to showcase the retail shops and restaurants we have.”

Second Fridays starts at Depot Park and stretches to U.S., lined with a drive-in car show, stages for live music, the Festhalle Market Platz open with locally grown food and demonstrations, food trucks, artists and much more.

“We’re going to have a pooch parade and dog show at Depot Park, with categories like the waggiest tail and best biscuit catcher,” said Magan  Bartlett, member services director at the chamber of commerce.

Among other activities will be a hay bale-tossing contest and a 5k and furry one-mile dog walk. Preregister for the run/walk events at https://bit.ly/2yHrClr or go to active.com and search “Furry 5K and 1 Mile Family Fun Dog Walk.”

Businesses will also have pop-up shops throughout the district to show and sell their products. Artists who will be showing their work are local and from out of town.

“The event is free, but just bring a little money for food and drink or if you want to shop,” Bartlett said. “This has been another great season for 2nd Fridays with the partnership between the chamber and parks and recreation, and the merchants association sponsoring the area south of U.S. 278. With all these efforts, each event has provided for some exciting evenings for residents and the visitors who are driving in. It’s a great way, too, to enjoy late-night dining and entertainment and get to know a little more about Cullman.”
