Some familiar four-legged friends remained victorious Saturday at the Cullman-Area Animal Welfare Association’s Doggie Daze dog show and wiener-dog race at Heritage Park.

After multiple heats, the dog to beat, Cleveland, topped the leader board in the Dachshund dash, placing first overall for the second time in his career.

At 4 years old, Cleveland has finished in the top two in every race he has competed in thus far.

“He just loves it, I guess,” said owner Kristi Osborn of Cullman after the race. “It’s like he knows what we’re coming here to do.”

In another repeat victory, Huntley, a 6-year-old Rat Terrier, again placed first in the talent portion, completing at least 15 tricks.

The victory marks the fifth consecutive No. 1 title for Huntley at Dog Daze. According to owners Kenneth and Joann Helton, Huntley “learns very fast.”

Other dogs at the competition Saturday included Star, a mixed breed.

While Star did not place in competition, he was a life saver, according to Jane Skinner.

Before competition, Skinner explained that Star belongs to her uncle, Edward Grimes, who was on-hand for the competition Saturday.

According to Skinner, Grimes former dog of 15 years became ill after it ate tainted pet food earlier this year.

“She went down in less than three weeks and died from it,” Skinner said. “He was grieving just about as bad as I’ve ever seen.”

It was not until recently Skinner and Grimes went to CAAWA adoption drive and found Star.

“This dog is just heaven sent,” Skinner said. “He doesn’t meet a stranger, and I don’t know how long he would have made it without someone to love.”

All proceeds from Saturday’s event went to benefit CAAWA.

CAAWA also operates a dog foster and adoption program to help homeless animals find loving owners. The organization recently purchased a mobile, emergency response unit to aid pet victims of disaster like Hurricane Katrina.

According to member Sheri Davis, the organization hopes to use funds collected Saturday toward opening a no-kill animal shelter in Cullman.
