A county resident, who was shot three times in an attempted murder-suicide incident Wednesday, is still listed in critical condition at a Birmingham hospital.

Joetta Carole Underwood, 33, of 15721 Alabama Highway 91, lot 33, was shot in the shoulder, chest and abdomen Wednesday, allegedly by ex-boyfriend Patrick O’Neal Lewis of Birmingham.

According to Sheriff Tyler Roden, Lewis apparently drove up from Birmingham, kicked in Underwood’s front door, threatened her, her three children and an adult male, Quincy Lovell Long of Bessemer, with a 0.357-caliber handgun.

He allegedly chased Underwood from the residence, firing at her several times, with at least three shots finding their mark.

After the incident, Lewis allegedly shot himself in the chest.

“We’re still investigating the motive,” Roden said Thursday. “We know he had an on-off relationship with the victim for about a year or so.”

Lewis and Underwood were found laying close to each other, outside a neighbor’s residence when Sheriff’s Deputies arrived.

Lewis was pronounced dead at the scene. Underwood was airlifted to a Birmingham hospital, where she remains in critical condition.

Friday’s coverage of the shooting was incorrect in stating that the incident occurred at the Country View RV Park was incorrect. It actually occurred at the address next door.
