A routine traffic stop by a Cullman County sheriff’s deputy early Monday morning resulted in an out-of-town passerby being booked into the Cullman County Detention Center.

Kyle Michael Smith, 22, of Oxford, was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, trafficking heroin, and driving while license suspended.

According to Cullman Narcotics Enforcement Team (CNET) director Joey Cone, the deputy on duty pulled Smith over near the 304 southbound exit for no tag and several improper lane changes. Upon reaching Smith’s Ford Taurus, the deputy suspected he was under the influence and asked that he step out of the car for a sobriety test. Hidden in Smith’s left hand was a spoon with residue.

“At that time we called K-9 unit and upon arrival the dog indicated something was in the vehicle and that’s when we found the drugs,” Cone said.

Inside of the car in the back seat, officers found 20 grams of heroin located in Smith’s jacket pocket. The total value recovered is estimated to have a street value of $4,000.

“All it takes is four grams of heroin to be charged with trafficking, so this is a big bust for us,” Cone said. “Those involved did an excellent job. Deputy Daniel Cummings, Sgt. Matthew Bales and the dog worked great together. They had a simple possible charge but they kept digging until they found everything.”

The report filed by the sheriff’s office indicates Smith was allegedly picking up the drugs in either Tennessee or Chicago and carrying them to the Birmingham area.

Cullman County Sheriff Mike Rainey praised the deputies for their efforts.

“It was a good collaborative effort between the deputy and K-9 unit and good instinct by all involved.” Rainey said.

Smith is being held on a $1 million bond at the Cullman County Detention Center. If found guilty, he could face a minimum 10-year prison sentence and pay up to a $100,000 fine.
