Cullman Mayor Don Green is recuperating from surgery to remove a benign tumor from his right jaw.

The surgery was conducted without complications Friday at St. Vincent Hospital in Birmingham.

Green said Tuesday he feels fine and was relieved to hear that the tumor removed from the perotic gland, located just below his right ear, was non-cancerous.

"I found a little nodule in the area right under my right jaw back before Christmas and when I had my annual checkup in January I pointed it out to my family physician, who then referred me to physicians who specialize in such cases," Green said. "When doctors examined the nodule, it showed up 'hot' which meant that benign or not it needed to come out. I received the results back Monday and the small tumor was benign, which I was very pleased to hear."

During 37 years of teaching and now two terms as Cullman's mayor, Green, 71, says he's been fortunate not to have had to cash in many sick days.

"One of the nurses seeing after me said she knew some teenagers who would love to have the blood pressure I have," Green said. "I've been very blessed over the years in regard to my health and I plan to bounce back from this very soon. I'd like to express my appreciation to everyone who has had me in their thoughts and prayers in recent weeks."
