An Eva man serving a life sentence plus 10 years for the September 1994 rape and sodomy of his 76-year-old grandmother at her Brooklyn residence has been denied parole.

Dale William Gilley Jr., 33, was sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty in June 1995 to first-degree rape. He received an additional 10 years for a plea of guilty to first-degree sodomy.

Gilley's parole review came before the Alabama Board of Pardons and Paroles in Montgomery Tuesday and was summarily dismissed, according to Jeff Roberts, assistant district attorney for Cullman County.

"Victim Service Officer J.W. Hicks and myself made the trip to Montgomery and addressed the pardons board. We asked that they deny Gilley's parole based on the nature of the crime and the fact that Gilley was sentenced to life and 10 years," Roberts said. "No one spoke on Gilley's behalf, nor did anyone speak on behalf of the victim, who I understand is now deceased. We made the trip to Montgomery to speak for the victim, and we're very pleased with the board's decision to deny parole."

Gilley, who is currently an inmate at the Easterling Correctional Facility in Clio, will not be eligible for parole again until the year 2011.

Hicks recalled that the case was one of the most violent and "hideous I've ever seen."
