Services for Myrtle Ima Goodhue, 94, were held Monday, Dec. 1, 2008, in the Chapel of the Garden at Rice Funeral Service, Claremore, Okla., the Rev. Sam Nichols shared words of comfort. Myrtle was laid to rest beside her husband, Harold Goodhue, at Woodlawn Cemetery following the service.

Rice Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Myrtle passed away Tuesday, Nov. 25. Born in Hightower, Ala., on Aug. 16, 1914, to James and Elvie Jones Story, Myrtle received her education in the rural farm areas of Anniston and Holly Pond, Ala. She met Harold James Goodhue in Holly Pond and the two were married in 1940 and made their first home in Muskogee, Okla. In 1941, the family relocated to Claremore and their only child, Doug, was born there.

Myrtle worked as a cook in the public school system for many years before her employment as a baker at what is now Rogers State University. She also baked the famous desserts at Hammet House Restaurant for several years. Leaving her baking days behind, Myrtle gained a reputation as a responsible and caring childcare provider. A number of Claremore’s families looked to her for help in raising their children, many of whom considered her like a grandmother because of her love and concern for them. A member of First Baptist Church since the 1940s, she served many years there in the young children’s Sunday School Department.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold J. Goodhue who passed away in 1975; siblings, Emmett, Clellon and Walter Story, Clois McAnear, Willie Mae Self; and stepsiblings, Lonnie Benjamin McGinnis, Jr., Dudley, Hobert and E.C. McGinnis, Dina Smith, Beulah Burnham and Ezma Dobbins.

Beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend, Myrtle is survived by her son, Doug (Jan) Goodhue of Claremore; grandchildren Rodney (Kris) Goodhue, and Holly Ann (Eric) Hammond; great-grandchildren, Gary, Megan, Kayla and Tyler; great-great-grandchildren, Brody and Mattie; and her siblings, Maxine Clingingsmith, Ann Drake and A.W. “Simon” McGinnis, all of Alabama.
