The exterior of the western Cullman County school is almost complete.

School and county officials are close to solving the water problems that threw a wrench into the project.

The Cullman County Board of Education's plan to open Harmony School at the start of the 2006-07 school year remains on target.

"Our goal is to take over the school the first of July," said Cullman County School Superintendent Nancy Horton. "That would give us enough time to get furniture into the buildings and get ready for the open house at the start of the school year."

While the outside of the building is nearing completion, there is still plenty of work to be done before students in grades K-8 who previously attended school at Logan and Jones Chapel can attend class there.

"They're completing putting on the roof covering," Horton said. "They are beginning to work on the inside. They're putting in the fixtures in the bathroom. All of the windows are in. The stone paving and curving work has been completed."

Work is being done on the gym, with the beams already in place. Workers were busy this week putting in wiring and doing duct work. Workers are also painting the hallways in the main building and installing the insulation.

"There is going to be a lot of finishing work," Horton said.

Work in coming weeks includes putting down floor tile and the ceramic work in the bathrooms. The parking lot must also be completed.

Horton said school officials and the Cullman County Water Department still must decide where to put the pumping station that will help provide the school with water. She said other issues concerning the providing of adequate water flow and pressure has been resolved.

"We invite everybody to drive by and see the progress that is being made," Horton said. "It's going to be a beautiful building."

The weather in the upcoming months will play a role in when the school will be completed, according to J.B. Marks, who is overseeing the construction.
