Three firefighters injured

Slick roads may have caused fire truck to roll over

Three Cullman firefighters were injured Saturday when their fire truck rolled over at the intersection of Highway 157 and Childhaven Road.

Although the truck is a total loss, Cullman Fire Department Chief Mike Hackney said Saturday evening that all three officers had been treated and released from Cullman Regional Medical Center.

“I’ve talked with a couple of them since they got home, and all three are OK, but they’re going to be sore for a couple of days,” Hackney said in a telephone interview from home.

Hackney said family members of the firefighters had requested their names not be released.

The accident occurred at approximately 2:30 p.m. while officers were responding to a fire call at Cullman Regional Medical Center. The fire truck left the road, struck a utility pole and overturned before coming to rest along the roadside.

The Cullman Police Department and Vinemont Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene of the accident, which is under investigation by CPD.

Hackney said wet roads might have caused the accident.

“My understanding is it was just rain-slicked roadways,” he said. “The eyewitnesses said the truck was not driving at an excessive speed. It was just a slippery spot and it started skidding.”

Hackney said the department does have a reserve truck that can be put into service as a short-term solution.

“But the reason it was put on reserve is because it needed repairs, so we’ll have to get the truck replaced,” he said.

  • Thoughtful people in Cullman

    Cullman was one of twenty stops I made while on book tour for “A Silence of Mockingbirds: The Memoir of a Murder.” I came to town at the request of Loretta Gillespie. We had met previously at the Alabama Book Festival in Montgomery. When Loretta learned I would be touring with my newest release, she asked if I would please come to her part of the country.
    One of the greatest blessings about touring with a book is the people I meet along the way. I knew something about the people of Cullman because Loretta had forwarded on to me stories of the aftermath of last year's devastating tornado. I had the opportunity to visit with Jimmy Simms and to hear first-hand his story of survival.
