4 city workers fired, 1 arrested in Phenix City

PHENIX CITY, Ala. — Authorities say four Phenix City parks and recreation employees have been fired and one has been charged with theft of property after an internal investigation.

The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reports that the investigation revealed they had been using city owned equipment for personal gain.

City officials declined to identify the fired employees. Police would not specify what they believe was taken because they are still investigating.

Phenix City Police Chief Ray Smith said the investigation is continuing. City officials said in a statement that the investigation began Nov. 26 after City Manager Wallace Hunter received a complaint.

Phenix City is about 85 miles east of Montgomery, just across the Chattahoochee River from Columbus, Ga.
