Authorities say the founder of a popular Alabama youth ministry who faces charges of impersonating a police officer has been taken into custody after they say he led police on a foot chase.
Jefferson County sheriff’s officials said Tuesday night they got a tip that 30-year-old Larry Matthew Pitt was at a Birmingham TV studio.
Authorities say Pitt saw officers and fled on foot toward the city’s Vulcan monument, with Birmingham police and sheriff’s deputies in pursuit. Sheriff’s officials say he struggled with officer before they handcuffed him and placed him in a patrol car.
Pitt is the 30-year-old founder of “The Basement,” a service which draws thousands of youth in Birmingham. He is also well-known as a speaker across the state, and has hosted services at numerous churches in and around Cullman County.
Pitt was arrested last week on charges of trying to impersonate a police officer in Jefferson County.
