MOBILE, Ala. —
Lawyers for a man convicted of killing a police officer in Mobile are seeking a new trial because they say race was a factor in jury selection.
AL.com reports that Vernon Madison already has been convicted at three separate trials for the 1985 shooting of Mobile police Cpl. Justin Schulte.
Now, lawyers for the Montgomery-based Equal Justice Initiative are trying to win a fourth trial for him on grounds that prosecutors improperly struck black people from the jury.
Prosecutors and defense lawyers argued about the issue in federal court on Monday. U.S. District Judge Kristi DuBose said she will rule at a later date.
