Miles named Alabama's Distinguished Young Woman

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Jean Elizabeth Miles of Houston County has been named Alabama's Distinguished Young Woman of 2013.

The al.com Website reported that Miles received the honor Saturday night at the competition at Frazier Memorial United Methodist church in Montgomery.

She was one of 52 young women who participated in the competition. She will go on to compete in the 56th National Finals in Mobile. The competition scored the contestants based on their interview skills, scholastics, talent, fitness and self-expression.

Coffee County's Payton Edberg was named first runner-up and Lee County's Nancy Fang was the contest's second runner-up..

During the competition, Miles performed "Sabre Dance" on the piano and answered an interview question about special education in public schools.
