Body possibly linked to cold cases in NE Ala

PIEDMONT, Ala. — Authorities want to determine if a body found in the woods of northeast Alabama is linked to an infamous drug ring that operated in the area.

Calhoun County Sheriff Larry Amerson tells The Anniston Star that investigators found a body near Piedmont on Wednesday. Forensics experts will now try to identify those remains.

James Patrick Burrows and Jeffrey Scott McFry went missing 22 years ago after allegedly stealing marijuana from drug kingpin David Ronald Chandler.

Karen Steed also is missing in a case authorities believe could be connected to Chandler's ring. A fourth person disappeared three years ago in a case that isn't linked to the organization.

Chandler is now in federal prison, and all four people remain missing.

Amerson says officials hope to identify the body using dental records.
