State to enforce gill net law in Tennessee basin

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Alabama's wildlife agency is clamping down on a form of fishing in north Alabama.

The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources say it's going to begin enforcing a ban on gill nets and trammel nets in the Tennessee River basin immediately.

Both nets can be used to catch large amounts of fish by blocking off a section of a stream or waterway.

The state says the gill net ban wasn't enforced for years based on a legal interpretation that it was unconstitutional.

The Alabama attorney general's office released an opinion on the law this week, and the wildlife agency says it will now change procedures and enforce the law.

The agency says the attorney general's opinion says the law can be enforced in the Tennessee River area.
