Ala. lawmaker pushing wind energy regulation bill

CENTRE, Ala. —

State Sen. Phil Williams is looking to pass a bill to establish guidelines for wind energy projects in the state.

The Rainbow City Republican told The Post of Cherokee County the proposal calls for the Alabama Department of Environmental Management to establish a permit application for companies looking to build wind energy projects in Alabama. The permit would cover construction and operation.

The bill also calls for there to be a 750-foot minimum barrier between the base of a wind turbine and the homes, minimum low points for blade tips, anti-climbing devices, high voltage signs and more.

Williams says he's met with the Legislative Reference Service to review the bill and he hopes to introduce and pass it before the legislative session ends May 20.
