Police search for suspect in Fultondale shooting

By Robert Carter

FULTONDALE — The victim of a shooting incident in Fultondale remains in critical condition while police continue to search for a gunman believed to be in his mid-20s.

Jerry Elsberry was shot by an assailant Saturday on Spring Street in the Glendale neighborhood. According to Fultondale Police, Elsberry was taken to UAB Hospital, where he is in critical but stable condition as of Monday morning.

Police did not say whether Elsberry lived in the house where the shooting took place. A search of Internet directories lists a Jerry (or Gerald) Elsberry at an address in the southern part of Gardendale, just north of the Fultondale city limits.

Police are still looking for a black male in his mid-20s who was seen leaving the scene of the shooting. A neighbor told The North Jefferson News that she saw the suspect walking away from the area, but then ran away when the driver of a pickup truck spotted him.

The suspect disappeared into overgrown brush, on lots where homes once stood before they were hit by the April 2011 tornado. Police blocked off an area bounded by Second Avenue, Fourth Avenue, Main Street and the rear of the JCPenney store in the Promenade Shopping Center.

Search dogs were brought in to sweep the area, but they were hindered by excessive heat and heavy overgrowth, and the search was called off after roughly three hours.

Police are also investigating whether or not the suspect acted alone.
