MOBILE, Ala. — A mass email from a Jefferson County man to Alabama legislators drew a response from one lawmaker that wasn't typical.
Eddie Maxwell sent an email Jan. 27 warning legislators that he would consider it a violation of the state constitution to introduce a gun control bill. Democratic Rep. Joseph Mitchell of Mobile wrote back an email referring to Maxwell's "slave-holding, murdering, adulterous, baby-raping, incestuous, snaggle-toothed...kin folk."
Maxwell sent back a reply saying Mitchell's message not what he expected from a legislator. The emails were made public by other legislators who received them.
Mitchell, who is black, said Wednesday he was explaining that citizens who descended from slaves and were disenfranchised by the state constitution have a different view of history and the constitution than white citizens like Maxwell.
