Prep Roundup: Cold Springs topples Priceville

By Justin Graves
Sports Writer

ROGERSVILLE — Cold Springs capitalized on several Priceville tunrovers early in the second half to pull away for a 77-49 win Tuesday afternoon in the 29th annual Northwest Alabama Girls Christmas Classic at Lauderdale County High School.

The Lady Eagles (14-1) used their zone defense to shut down Priceville’s (8-6) passing lanes, creating turnovers that turned into easy points.

“Our girls are used to playing zone defense,” Cold Springs coach Tammy West said. “That’s what we’ve always played, so they know what we have to do.”

Cold Springs built an early 25-10 cushion in the first period. With solid shooting from behind the 3-point line, the Lady Eagles extended their lead to 39-21 at the half.

Cold Springs maintained its momentum in the second half when Jaclyn Carden knocked down a 3-pointer in the opening seconds of the third period. Paige Parker followed by knocking down an open three for the Lady Eagles.

Allison White made a 3-pointer for Priceville on the ensuing possession. But after Carden countered with a three at the other end, Parker followed with three consecutive 3-pointers to extend the Lady Eagles lead to 30.

“We’re going to take a lot of shots from behind the line,” West said. “But with our height, that’s the way our team has to play. We’ve got a couple of players who can shoot it though.”

West said that after a couple of years of not playing the Northwest Alabama Christmas Classic, she’s glad to be back in the tournament. The tournament in Rogersville is considered to be one of the toughest Chirstmas tournaments in the state almost every year. Last year, two state champions played in the tournament – Deshler and Lauderdale County – but none were able to win it.

“We’ve wanted to get back in this tournament for a while,” West said. “But it’s hard to get in the field. This is the type of tournament you want to play in. We’re hoping that playing in a tough field like this one will get us ready for when tournament time rolls around.”

Cold Springs was led by Georgia Myrex with 25 points, while Parker scored 19. Kayla Carden scored 12 points, Jessi Harbison scored 10 points, Baliegh Davis scored six points, Jaclyn Carden scored six points and Palee Myrex added one point.

Calli Cox led Priceville with 12 points, while Abbie Harris added 13 points. White and Marisa Chambers scored seven points each, Chanel McLindon scored six points and Mellisa Johnson added four points.

Cold Springs will play defending Class 3A state champion Lauderdale County tonight at 7:30 p.m.

“It was a solid effort coming off the holiday,” said Addison head coach Scott Curd. “We’ll try to build on this Thursday.”
