Eagles just miss title

Cold Springs boys finish third overall in 2A; Myrex leads girls with two championships

Cold Springs boys track team had done everything it could possibly do Saturday.

But even though Cold Springs had done everything possible to take second place at the Class 2A state track meet at Troy University, the Eagles were still one event shy.

Sitting neck-and-neck with Lanett with only one event to go, coach Clay Campbell knew it would be one of those two schools taking second place at the meet. And unfortunately for Cold Springs, the Eagles didn’t have anyone competing in the 4X400-meter relay.

Lanett went on to edge out Cold Springs by a slim margin for the 2A runner-up spot. Falkville won the meet by a margin of over 100 points.

“We were close,” Campbell said. “But hey, these guys did everything they could. I’m extremely proud of every one of these guys. We came down here and had a very good showing.”

Cold Springs girls also had a good showing this weekend. Led by Palee Myrex who won both the 1600- and 3200-meter runs, the Lady Eagles finished sixth overall.

From the showing that Campbell got from his team this weekend, the Cold Springs coach knows the future is very bright.

“We only have one senior (Baliegh Davis),” Campbell said. “After that, it’s all underclassmen. I think this was a good experience and it will motivate everyone to work hard. Our goal is to win a championship, and these kids will do everything it takes.”

For Fairview, Amanda Smith recorded a state championship in the discus throw with a distance of 101 feet. The 3,200-meter relay team of Chalyce and Marlah Stancil, Kelsey Rice and Traci Hite finished fourth.

The 1,600-meter relay team of the Stancil sisters, Mandi House and Courtney Strong finished third.

Cali Tidwell finished fourth, while Aaron Turney finished in the top 10 in the boys’ pole vault.

“Our seniors had a good meet,” said Fairview head coach Hobson Hite. “I was glad to see Amanda get her a state championship before she graduated.

“We’ve had a good time here, and it’s easy for the kids to get distracted with everything going on. But they did a good job of keeping their focus where it needed to be and running a good meet.”

In Class 5A, Cullman failed to win any state championships, but head coach Danny Miller said he was pleased with the performances of his athletes.

Lexie Carpenter finished the 400-meter run in 1:06, while Danielle Dean, Caley Whittemore and Kelsey Crawford ran the 1,600-meter run in 5:29. 5:46 and 6:02, respectively.

The 1,600-meter relay team of Dean, Emily Miller, Carpenter and Whittemore finished third, and Crawford, Dean, Alex Laganke and Whittemore cut 10 seconds off their 3,200-meter relay.

Savannah Knop recorded 31feet-7-inches in the triple jump for a personal record and finished second in the high jump at 5-feet-2-inches. Sarah McHan finished seventh in the javelin throw at 87 feet, and Emily Miller was right behind her at 75 feet.

For the boys, Ben Gomez recorded a fifth-place finish and personal best of 4:35 in the 1,600-meter run, while the 3,200-meter relay team of Gomez, Camden Holmes, Ryan Laganke and Dallas Malone finished fifth,

Russell Miller set a new school record in the javelin throw at 158-feet-7-inches for a seventh-place finish.
