Hanceville’s boys basketball team is heading back home for a sub-region matchup, and its bringing the Class 3A, Area 13 Tournament trophy with them.
Five Bulldogs scored at least seven points in Monday’s final versus top-seeded Danville, leading Hanceville to a gutsy 58-50 victory over the tourney host.
“It was the best team effort of the season,” coach Daniel Wakefield said of his Dawgs. “We had balanced scoring, and our bench was the difference in the game.”
Matt Burns was Hanceville’s high scorer with 13 points, while Chris Smith was close behind with 11. Brontae Harris and Dont’e Reese were good for eight points apiece, and Keith Twitty was valuable with seven.
Marshall Johnson posted five points for the Bulldogs. Xavier Malcom and Sheldon Lewis rounded out the team’s scorefest with three points each.
Hanceville (15-13) will now move on to the sub-region stage on Friday at 7 p.m. in its middle school gym, where it and Winfield will battle for a spot in the Northwest Regional Tournament.
