A couple of quick baskets coupled with a free throw, and just like that, Hanceville High raced out to a one-point lead.

And then the floodgates opened.

Jordan Melton poured in six points and Hannah Alexander nailed a 3-pointer, sparking a 15-1 Vinemont run to close out the first quarter.

The Eagles never glanced back, either, romping past Hanceville 47-23 in the opening round of the Cullman County basketball tournament Monday night at Wallace State’s Tom Drake Coliseum.

Vinemont built a 13-point lead by halftime before blowing the contest open after the break.

Christina Franks scored seven of her nine points in the third quarter as the Eagles outscored Hanceville 15-6 to carry a 41-18 lead into the final period.

Melton led Vinemont with 17 points, while Franks tossed in nine and Katie Fuller added six.

Kendria Watkins led Hanceville with seven points and Emillie Thomas followed with four.

Vinemont plays defending champion Cold Springs in the quarterfinals today at 6:15 p.m.
