CULLMAN —
The Legion of Mary at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Cullman is a vital parish organization which develops the glory of God through the holiness of its members as they devote time to daily prayer and the Blessed Mother's ministry in their community through their spiritual and corporal works of mercy.
These legionaries are part of a world-wide organization founded by St. Louis Marie de Montfort. First enrollment of members took place in Dublin, Ireland, Sept. 7, 1921, on the eve of the feast of Our Lady's Nativity.
With the sanction of the church and under the powerful leadership of Mary Immaculate, Mediatrix of all Graces, members have dedicated themselves into a legion for services in the warfare which is perpetually waged by the church against the world and its evil powers. The organization was formed originally on the model of an army, principally on that of the army of ancient Rome.
Sacred Heart's members meet each Monday in the St. Vincent de Paul building at 6 p.m., gathering around a simple altar with the statue of the Blessed Mother in place of honor. Prayer begins each meeting and all gatherings throughout the world follow the same universal program.
During the following week, Cullman's legionaries visit nursing facilities and the homebound, recite the Rosary at wakes, attend funeral masses and Eucharistic Adorations, distribute Holy Communion to those in need and fulfill other door-to-door and special needs actions for the Blessed Mother and their church family.
Open to both men and women, Sacred Heart of Jesus's Legion of Mary (Our Lady Queen of Peace Praesidium) was organized June 9, 2007. For more information, contact Irene Welch at 256-352-2908.
This group will be highlighted during the upcoming ministry fair scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 19, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Family Life Center at Sacred Heart of Jesus. The fair will highlight 14 other ministerial organizations in the parish as well, with representatives manning their individual booths to showcase the various opportunities for stewardship, service and assistance available to members of Sacred Heart. The Ministry Fair which is part of the continuing celebration of the 100th anniversary of the laying of the cornerstone for the present Sacred Heart of Jesus Church building has been coordinated by Sondra Nassetta, Dorothy Faulkner and Dolores Gisbey-Green.
All members and friends are invited to the Legion of Mary's yearly social at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15, in the Family Life Center of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church.
