Rev. Jankens/Trinity Lutheran to celebrate pastor's 10th anniversary

CULLMAN — A celebration honoring the tenth anniversary of Rev. John Jankens’ ordination into the ministry was held Aug. 5, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hanceville. The event included a surprise luncheon for Pastor Jankens, his family, the congregation and several guests.

Rev. Jankens was born to Aeldgytha and Rev. Edward Jankens in 1961, in Ferndale, Mich. He was baptized into God's kingdom of grace in Berkeley, Mich., and confirmed in St. Clair Shores, Mich. After graduating with a bachelor of science in electrical engineering from Lawrence Technological University, he served his country for 15 years as a civilian engineer for the Department of Defense.

He then felt a calling to serve the Lord as a minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He received his master of divinity in 2002 from Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, Ind. After completing a two-year field assignment at Christ Lutheran in Woodbum, Ind., he followed a course of study that included a vicarage during the final year of study. That vicarage was served at Trinity Lutheran, Hanceville. Upon completion of the vicarage, Trinity called Rev. Jankens to serve as pastor, and he was ordained there.

Trinity Lutheran Church in Hanceville is now 127 years old and it is worth noting that Trinity is the same church to which Pastor Jankens’ late father, Rev. Edward Jankens, received his first call to the ministry in 1949. Pastor considers it a special blessing from God that he and his father were both ordained into the ministry of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod at Trinity.

During his time at Trinity, Rev. Jankens has also served as a member of the Volunteer Chaplain Association at Cullman Regional Medical Center and has participated in many community activities in Hanceville and in Cullman County.

Pastor and his wife, Judy, have been married since 1983 and have three sons, David, Andrew and Ethan. They are especially proud that David married Jesse Collins, a descendent of the Michelfelder family, one of the founding families of Trinity in Hanceville. Andrew is a sophomore at Wallace State College. Their youngest son, Ethan, was born while at Trinity and baptized at the baptismal font carved by his late grandfather, Rev. Edward Jankens. Rev. Edward also hand carved the pulpit, altar and lectern.
