CULLMAN —
Brother Anselm Christopher Kuehler was joined by the monks of St. Bernard Abbey and his family and friends Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2012, for his Profession of Final Monastic Vows in the Abbey Church. Brother Anselm made his vows during the 11:30 a.m. Mass celebrating the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.
Father Joel Martin, O.S.B., Junior Master of the monastery, presented Brother Anselm as a candidate for final vows to Abbot Cletus Meagher, O.S.B. and the community. After the community had given their affirmation, Abbot Cletus delivered a homily for the occasion. In his remarks, he spoke of the vowed life and the rich monastic tradition that is the heritage of those who live the Benedictine vocation.
Following the ancient custom, Brother Anselm read his vows before the Abbot and then signed the document on the altar with Brother Leo Borelli, O.S.B, and Father Bede Marcy, O.S.B, as his official witnesses. After the singing of the prayer of profession, he was clothed in the monastic cuculla, a robe given to monks who have solemnly professed their final monastic vows.
Brother Anselm is originally from Tyler, Texas. He is the son of Simon Henry and Carol Ann Halloran Kuehler and is the second of six children. He attended school at the University of Dallas and earned a bachelor of arts degree in English and theology while there. He was a teacher for most of his career. Before coming to St. Bernard, he was employed at St. Ann’s School in Decatur. Brother Anselm currently serves as a teacher in St. Bernard Preparatory School. His duties also include work at Ave Maria Grotto.
After the liturgical celebration, the congregation was invited to join Brother Anselm and the monastic community for a festive dinner in the St. Bernard Dining Hall. In attendance were a number of his former students from St. Ann’s School as well as St. Bernard Preparatory School.
