Fitness changes for older adults
Cullman Regional Medical CenterMost of the older adults of our community know firsthand some of the effects of aging. Here is a list of just a few changes that you can expect after each birthday:
‰ Higher blood pressure
‰ Increased body fat
‰ Progressive bone and muscle loss
‰ Slowed reflexes
‰ Osteoporosis
‰Diminished lung capacity
This sounds discouraging but there is hope! Exercise can go a long way towards slowing and even reversing the effects of aging.
Independence can be hindered by a sedentary lifestyle. In contrast, regular exercise increases muscular fitness and bone density, improves stamina, enhances posture, improves coordination and increases the ability to perform everyday activities. No matter how old you are, you should be able to reap the benefits from exercise. You should discuss your plans to begin an exercise program with your doctor. Your medications should be reviewed by a physician to determine possible complications brought on during exercise. Older people are more easily injured and slower to heal than younger people so, it is important to get sound advice from a fitness expert who can help prescribe a safe, effective exercise program.
