GUEST COLUMN: Think twice about Obama
By Brian BatesPeople please pay attention to what is being said (or not being said) in the political arena. Obama made a comment the other day saying that McCain was more worried about talking about him (Obama) than he is talking about the issues. Hello! At what point in time has Obama ever talked about issues other than change? What kind of change? He will not talk about what kind of changes need to be made. Why? Because he doesn't know? He doesn't have enough experience to know? Obama is the one that does not want to debate with McCain on the issues! You have to ask yourself why?
Do you really think that he will not raise taxes? How is he going to do that? He wants to spend more money on welfare for illegals. He wants goverment controlled health care. How does it get paid for? With tax dollars! He said he is going to raise taxes on the rich. So he is saying that he and all his friends and cronies are willing to pay more taxes? While the rest of us pay less tax? Yeah right! Basically, if you have a job, you are rich and will pay more taxes, period!
Obama wants to be commander and chief of our military? I don’t understand how he can be when he has absolutely no patriotism for this country? He is patriotic when it is necessary and convenient for him to be! In this day and age is not the time for us to have a leader that is soft and unpatriotic! The world does not want the U.S. to be the power that it is and we are the target for every terrorist group out there. Do we really need a leader that pretty much agrees with that? Obama wants to have one-world nation. That can never happen as long as we want to remain free! He wants to disarm America! If you will go back and read history you will see that is exactly how Hitler took over Europe! Thomas Jefferson once said “No man shall ever be debarred the use of arms. The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort to protect themselves against tyranny in government.” “And what country can preserve its liberties, if its rulers are not warned from time to time, that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.”
McCain is not perfect, a long way from it, but for me he is the obvious choice. Why, you ask? Because of things that are important to me and my family. A strong military being one of the top reasons. He will not weaken this country’s military. Because he personally knows how important our military is in this day and age! I have never been a McCain fan — in fact, I’m still not. But he is a patriot and will stand up for this country and do what it takes to defend it and that says a lot for him!
Our economy right now, well, to be blunt, “it sucks.” I have heard people say that President Bush has put us here. Well, people wake up! Our economy is down right now due to the former president. His economic plans at its best or worst. Everyone says we had a great economy when he was president. Well, folks, it wasn’t because of anything that he did. He rode the economic wave of presidents Reagan and Bush Sr. Now, President Bush is getting pounded by the wave that the former president rode and is taking all the heat. I know what you are thinking, he is the president and he is responsible for it. Well, tell you what, why don’t you listen to the next State of the Union Address. Every president says their economic plan will take effect 6 to 10 years down the road. Do you honestly think that the president, any president, can change things that quickly? If so, then you might want to go back to school and pay attention this time in democracy and economics. Nothing moves that fast, especially in our government. The next president whoever it is will have to deal with our current presidents economic plans. But of course whether it turns out good our bad that president will be praised or blamed for something that he had nothing to do with.
It is time people for you to figure out what is important to you. Don’t believe everything that is spoon fed to you from the media, wether it be TV, print or radio. Investigate the facts and then form your own opinion. Voting records are a matter of public record. Look into it. See how they voted on the issues important to you or if they voted at all and then form an opinion. Please don’t take what you are told by the media as gospel. They only feed you their corporate agenda, not necessarily the truth, the truth how they see it and want it.
I read an article from a well known columnist in San Francisco. He wrote, “McCain cannot make me vote for him, but Obama can make me vote for McCain.”
Think about it.

TIMES EDITORIAL: City made mistake backing out of mediation plans
If the City of Cullman's Duck River plan really is the slam-dunk case they say it is, the city shouldn't have anything to fear from a mediator.

TIMES EDITORIAL: Steady hand needed on water supply
When two county commissioners showed up at The Cullman Times office Monday to propose a new long-term water plan for the county — taking water from Smith Lake instead of putting a dam on the Duck River — it came as a shock to us.

Government doesn’t create jobs
On Friday, the Obama administration released its figures on jobs “saved or created” by the government’s stimulus package. They came up with the number 650,000, but what’s it matter? We’re talking about a completely fictitious calculation.

We’re all Americans
My dad was a Democrat and my mom was a Republican. In the past, I have voted as follows: 1960-J.F. Kennedy, 1972-Richard Nixon, 1976-Jimmy Carter, 1980-Ronald Reagan. There were and are different issues facing our nation at different times. Why so much flip flop?

We’re responsible for what happens in war
We all know someone who has fought for our country. They come from us. They are our brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, and friends. They are fighting right now. They do their job. They do not have a say in where or whom they fight. They follow orders with courage and love of country. They try to get home again.

I would like to recommend to those in charge of the proposed new water system that they adopt strong and enforceable rules and regulations for the protection of the water supply.

Fight for freedom
The late Paul Harvey wrote in 1952, “But free men, free to do anything, are also free to do nothing. Apparently that is our choice. We said we no longer wanted “opportunity.” We wanted “security.” And they gave us chains.

Obama spreading socialist agenda
A majority elected Obama, the lifelong Socialist. Some didn't know. Some didn't care. Some still don't care but most now know. He has governed from the left, with massive government spending and borrowing, more control of banks, lending and even car companies, a so far failed attempt to cap and trade energy, a so far failed attempt to nationalize health care and a far left Supreme Court appointment.
