Letters to the Editor

Thanks for support

The Ladies’ Auxiliary and men of the VFW Post 2214 would like to thank the community, Wal-Mart, and the dedicated members who took part in our Fourth of July Buddy Poppy Drive.

This was a success because of the members, donors and Wal-Mart for allowing us to hold the drive in front of the store.

Sandy Werger

Publicity Chairman, VFW Ladies’ Auxiliary

Generous community

My husband and I were reminded what a great community Cullman and its people are. Due to my husband’s declining health he had to have a wheelchair ramp built. Being on a fixed income we couldn't afford a private contractor. Some very kind people came to our aid. Hr. Billy Oliver headed the team that came along with several, whose names we didn't get. They came on their own time and expense and built a ramp for my husband.

We were so amazed not only how many came but that the ramp was built like a professional contractor. They did a great job and we would like to send out a special thank you to them.

The citizens’ money

I am a concerned citizen, and my concerns center on the way our American troops are treated versus how we are treating civilians who experience some type of violence or danger. Our troops willingly go overseas, into danger, and literally offer their lives to keep other Americans safe. They daily face dangers equally as ghastly and heart-rending as the 911 tragedies at the twin towers, at the Pentagon and elsewhere on that day of horror.

Do our troops’ families get multiple millions of dollars? Just who authorized the dispensation of our sacred public funds (taxpayers’ sweat) to be given in such huge amounts to people who were not guaranteed (anymore than the rest of us, or those troops willingly offering their lives on a daily basis) that they would arrive to work safely that day and return home safely?

What is happening to the American government that our seniors got a 2.3 percent increase in their Social Security this year, and most had already been billed more than that measly increase by their supplemental insurance companies, and indeed their Medicare premiums had also increased.

Yet, you would cover illegal aliens with our Social Security when we had to practically fight to get ours high enough so that we could exist, even though we had PAID INTO IT?!

Perhaps if those in U.S. Government, who would jeapordize our seniors’ very livelihood, faced the taking away of their OWN livelihood, they would think just a little bit more before offering our benefits to illegal aliens while we struggle to even meet expenses, particularly so since the cost of gasoline has resulted in price increases in literally everything needed by seniors as well as other working Americans.

Just who is overseeing our billions and billions in annual aid to foreign countries? Is it not time to reflect on just who is most deserving here? Shouldn’t those who have devoted their lives working and paying into the coffers of the U.S. Treasury be given must a mite more consideration before we take on the hoardes of others: Homeless, hungry, weary, “un-free” peoples from Mexico, Central America, Africa, and anywhere else from which they migrate, including Haiti, Cuba, etc., and dispense all of the wealth in our treasury that has been placed there by hardworking Americans, NOT given from the rich bank accounts of our politicians?!
