Letters to the editor

A worthy cause

In response to Fire Chief Mike Hackney:

The members of Cullman Firefighters Association would like to clear up any confusion about our fundraiser. Cullman Firefighters Association is doing a telephone fundraiser, and the proceeds do not go to Cullman Fire/Rescue. Cullman Fire/Rescue is funded by tax revenues from the City of Cullman. In our advertisement that was printed in the April 5 and April 12 editions of this paper, we tried to show that Cullman Firefighters Association is a local affiliate of the International Association of Firefighters and intentionally did not mention Cullman Fire/Rescue.

Cullman firefighters, and in turn the citizens of Cullman, will benefit from this fundraiser, just as they have benefited from efforts from this group in the past.

Monies from this fundraiser will be used to fund a program which will help families who have lost their homes to fires; it will be used to buy smoke detectors for the elderly and low-income families to help protect them in case of a fire; it will be used to continue support for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, which we have raised tens of thousands of dollars for over the past few years.

It will also go to fund lobbying efforts in Montgomery to pass laws that make Cullman and the State of Alabama a safer place to life, including fire prevention, hazardous materials and emergency response laws.

Any questions or comments may be forwarded to local2644@yahoo.com or call 339-7417.

Billy Barnett

President, Cullman Firefighters Association

Poor judgement

We need action taken immediately on Cullman County water lines getting large enough for fire hydrants.

We live in Fairview off Welcome Road on County Road 1552. There are five houses on this road. We all need our water lines replaced with larger ones.

Talking to the Cullman County Water Department is like pulling teeth — if you can manage to get anyone to call back.

We don’t need new buildings. We need people in our public office to realize the needs of our taxpayers who are struggling to pay their house insurance.

Is anyone listening? Does anyone care?
