Shirley Ratliff Putney
Shirley Ratliff Putney passed away Friday, February, 22, 2013. She was born and raised in Blountsville, Ala. with brothers Bud and Bryce, where her father had a large mercantile store. Her grandfather, Vernon Ratliff descended from and followed the early landowners and developers in the valley of Gum Springs. Her father subsequently went into business in Cullman. Following studies at Stevens College in Missouri and Jacksonville State
University Shirley and her husband followed the family to Cullman and operated a
furniture and accessories store in downtown.
Shirley established herself as one of the early talented professional interior designers in Cullman. She worked first out of the store, Ben Prickett's, then later from her furniture and design shop, Shirley Prickett's. In her stores Shirley presented meticulously selected top styles in merchandise from around the world. Over the years she did acclaimed interior design work in many fine homes and decorator show houses in northern Alabama. Shirley was known for her unique, creative style and ner eye for color. Several of Cullman's successful designers credit Shirley for their start and early training.
Shirley was preceded in death by her father, J. Worth Ratliff; mother, Irene Bailey Ratliff; and her brother, Worth "Bud" Ratliff.
She is survived by her loving husband, William H. Putney; brother, W. Bryce Ratliff; daughter, Leanne (Kevin) Prickett Mitchell of Atlanta; son, Ben Alan (Gecille) Prickett of New York; stepdaughter, Melissa (Scott) Hooker of Birmingham; grandchildren, Aislinn Prickeit, Natalie Prickett, Ben Prickett and Alex Mitchell. Shirley was especially loyal and devoted to her family and cherished husband, Bill.
Graveside services will be held on Monday, February 25, 2013 at 2 p.m.at Mt. Tabor Cemetery in Gum Springs, Pastor Steve Williams officiating. The cemetery sign is located 5.9 miles east of Highway 31 from Garden City on the Roland Johnson Parkway (Highway 26). The family will be at home to receive visitors wishing to honor Shirley following the services at 807 3rd Ave., S. E. in Cullman.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to Hospice of Cullman County, P O. Box 1108, Cullman, AL 35056.
No viewing or visitation is planned. Moss Service-funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
