Joseph J. ‘Coach Joe’ Shults

Mr. Joseph J. “Coach Joe” Shults of the Fairview Community in Cullman passed away on July 3, 2013 at his residence at the age of 88. He was born in Cullman on November 24, 1924 to Julius S. and Eufala Walton Shults. He served in The United States Naval Air Corp in World War II in the Pacific Theater. He was a teacher and a coach that spent many years as the winningest coach in Cullman and Lawrence County. He was a member of The Cullman County Sports Hall of Fame and The Lawrence County Sports Hall of Fame. He was also nominated to The Alabama High School Sports Hall of Fame. Cullman County awards a “Joe Shults Award” each year to the outstanding basketball player in the county, a “Joe Shults Award” is also given to Fairview High School outstanding player. The Fairview High School Gym is named in his honor. He has been a member of The First Baptist Church of Fairview since 1956. He is preceded in death by his parents, Brothers: Charlie W., Thomas W., and John D. Shults, Sister: Berneice Tune.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, July 7, 2013 at 2 p.m. at The First Baptist Church of Fairview with Dr. David Chambers and Rev. Horace Hall officiating. Interment will be in the adjoining cemetery. Mr. Shults will lie in state for one hour prior to the service.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Bobbie Calloway Shults; a son, Gary Lee (Judy) Shults;  a daughter, Sharon Lynne (John) Drake; a sister, Avis Oaks; grandchildren, Isaac (Ellen) Shults, Joel (Jessica) Shults, Will  and Jake Drake; great-grandsons, Max and Rand Shults; step-grandson, Chad (Leigh) Leopard; step-great-grandchildren, Anne, Virginia, Cal and Jane Leopard.

Pallbearers will be Elwyn Heatherly, Bo Bolzle, Bartee Bryan, Gerald Johnson, Robin Cummings, Rex Johnson, Avis Saint, Bobby Meherg and Ken Dyer. Honorary pallbearers will be past players.

Visitation will be Saturday, July 6, 2013 at Moss Funeral Home from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to First Baptist Church of Fairview Building Fund in memory of Coach Joe Shults.

    Carlton Eugene Stafford, 82, of Cullman passed away Saturday, July 26, 2014, at Cullman Regional Medical Center. He was born April 14, 1932, James and Mary Katherine Brown Stafford. Mr. Stafford was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War. He was the original owner of Carlton’s restaurant.

    Susan Werner died Monday, July 21, 2014, as a result of an apparent fall at her home in Gainesville, Florida. Susan grew up in Jacksonville, Florida, and, after graduation from FSU, spent many years in Cullman, where she taught elementary school and received a master’s degree from UAB. While in Cullman, she married Robert Werner and helped run a family retail business.
