Fred William Abt
Funeral services for Fred William Abt, 87, of Cullman will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 22, 2013, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, the Rev. John Bussman officiating, with interment in Cullman City Cemetery. He will lie in state for one hour prior to services.
Cullman Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Abt died Saturday, May 18, in Cullman Long Term Care. A lifelong resident of Cullman, he was born Jan. 25, 1926, in Cullman to William August and Julia Hasenbein Abt. He graduated in 1950 from the University of Alabama. He was a public accountant, providing tax services to numerous clients throughout a 60-year career. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Europe during World War II. His military career continued in the U.S. Army Reserve for 20 years, achieving the rank of Captain before retiring. His many civic contributions include Cullman’s Historical Society, Cullman Oktoberfest, serving as Burgermeister of Cullman’s Oktoberfest, and serving over 50 years as a member of Cullman Civitan Club. He served as President of the Alabama Retarded Children’s Association (ARC) and remained actively engaged for the betterment for handicapped and mentally challenged individuals in excess of 50 years’ service. In 1970, Mr. Abt was awarded the William Crawford Gorgus Award, which is presented only to a citizen in the State of Alabama who is not actively engaged fulltime in the health field, nor holds a medical degree, but has been found to be outstanding in health work. He was a lifelong member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Cullman, giving years of service through various committees, clubs and organizations.
Survivors include his wife, Jane Davis Abt; a daughter, Jeanne Abt Mackey; two sons, Billy Abt and Jim Abt; four grandchildren, Duffy (Heather) Bunis, Jamie Bunis, Robbie (Jennifer) Abt and Katie Abt; and two great-grandchildren, Brooke Bunis and Greyson Bunis.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church or the Margaret Jean Jones Center.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Ruby Edmonds passed away Tuesday, March 4, 2014, at Cullman Regional Medical Center. She was 76 years old. She was born Aug. 12, 1937, to Delmer and Minnie Kilgo Twilley.

Edith Marie Thomas
Edith Marie Thomas, 77, of Mint Hill, N.C., passed away peacefully at Hospice of Union County Friday, Feb, 28, 2014. She was born June 16, 1936, in Hanceville, Ala. Edith was one of nine children and the daughter of the late Earl and Irene Kretzschmar. She was raised in Alabama, where she met her husband, Ed, and where many of her family and friends still reside. Edith and Ed have been active members of Morning Star Lutheran Church of Matthews for over 30 years. Edith enjoyed camping, sewing, gardening and going to yard sales.

Funeral services for the Rev. Donald Lee Abbott, 69, of Hanceville will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 6, 2014, at New Prospect Baptist Church, the Revs. Ray Ponder and Wayne Williams officiating, with interment in church cemetery. The body will lie in state from 1 to 2 p.m. at the church.
