Frances Marie Christianson Kirts

Frances Marie Christianson Kirts

Frances "Fran" Kirts passed away Saturday, February 16, 2013, at the age of 94. She was born in Kiester, Minnesota, on July 17, 1918, to Clara and Martin Christianson. She was preceded in death by her parents and her five brothers (Howard, Donald, Vernon, Forrest, and Dennis).

She married Elmer Kirts on December 24, 1939, in Kiester and celebrated their 73rd anniversary this past December. In 1966, the family moved to Cullman when Bendix Corp. built a plant in Cullman County.

Ms. Kirts was a homemaker as well as an active member in her church, St. Andrew's United Methodist, and her community. She helped organize Cullman's first Welcome Wagon Club, she was a member and officer in Quest Club, and she headed the group that brought the first voting machines to Cullman. She was a member of the United Methodist Women, Young at Heart (Seniors), and the Welcome Grace Sunday School Class.

Ms. Kirts loved to travel, and she and her husband visited the 50 states, Mexico, and Canada. Another love was cooking: she will be remembered for her buttermilk coffee cakes and her chocolate chip pound cakes, which she gave to friends, family, and church functions.

But her greatest love was for her family; she was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Survivors include her husband, Elmer, of Decatur; her 3 daughters, Cassie (Darrell) Huck of Seguin, TX, Judy Allred of Cullman, and Beverly (Dwain) Zehr of Priceville. She is survived by 5 grandchildren, Sara (Les) Barnett of Cullman, Eric (Kim) Zehr of Priceville, Emily Zehr of Priceville, Kristin Allred of Savannah, GA, and Lindsay Huck of Austin, TX. She was "Oma" to 5 great-grandchildren, Eli and Carson Posman of Savannah, Andrue and Jackson Barnett of Cullman, and Aidan Zehr of Priceville.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Southern Care Hospice, 417 Main St. NW, Hanceville, AL 35077; or St. Andrew's United Methodist Church, 615 Main Ave. SW, Cullman, AL 35055

A memorial for family members will be held on Sunday, February 24 at 6:00 at St. Andrew's United Methodist Church.
