Elizabeth Martin Burns, 97, passed away on Thursday, November 28, 2013 after a brief illness. She was born on September 6, 1916 in Cullman Alabama to Walter and Grace Sparks Martin. She was a much loved family member, teacher, musician, artist, sewist, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and great-great grandmother and wonderful mother-in-law. She was a long time member of The First United Methodist Church of Cullman and the Barbara Heck Circle. She graduated from Sacred Heart Academy, St. Bernard College and George Peabody College. She was a past member of the University Women’s Association. Elizabeth was an Elementary teacher for many years, in several schools including ones in Delray Beach Florida, Opelika Alabama and Clarksville Tennessee. She was a passionate bridge player an enjoyed teaching bridge to friends and family members. She is preceded in death by her husband of 44 years: Dr. Ellis B. Burns, and her parents.
Funeral services will be on Monday, December 2, 2013 at 1:00 P.M. at The First United Methodist Church of Cullman with Rev. Byron Vance officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 12:00 Noon until service time. Interment will be in Cullman City Cemetery.
Survivors are: Daughter: Ellece Varnes, Son: Dr. Ellis M. (Lou) Burns, 6 Granddaughters: Connie Whatley, Grace Schrimsher, Norma Hope, Gail (Richard) Cooper, Robin (David) Sanford and Carrie (Matt) Newberger. Elizabeth was blessed with 14 great grandchildren and 8 great great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Steinway Piano Restoration Fund at The First United Methodist Church of Cullman, Hospice of North Alabama or your favorite charity.
