CULLMAN — Larry Elbert Buchanan

Funeral services for Larry Elbert Buchanan, 64, formerly of Tuscaloosa, will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 17, 2013, at Tuscaloosa Memorial Chapel, with burial in Tuscaloosa Memorial Park.

Tuscaloosa Memorial Chapel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Larry passed peacefully from this life Monday, May 13, at UAB Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family. He was born and raised in Alexandria, Va. He moved to Tuscaloosa in 1967 to attend the University of Alabama, briefly serving in the U.S. Marine Corps before returning to school and later graduating with majors in history and religion and a minor in psychology. A “jack of all trades”, Larry worked in many professions, but was most proud of the work he accomplished as a psychology assistant at Bryce Hospital and later on working with fellow veterans at the Veterans Administration as a nursing assistant. Larry had a passion for the internal combustion engine and was an avid hot rod and motorcycle enthusiast. A voracious reader and military history buff, Larry enjoyed sharing his knowledge on the subject and collecting war memorabilia. He also enjoyed classic movies and collecting classic movie monsters. Larry was a talented sketch artist and sculptor. He had an infectious laugh, a warm and impishly charismatic personality that endeared him to those who came to know him. He was a loyal and generous friend, eager to help those in need. A loving father, grandfather, and husband, Larry was truly “one of a kind” and leaves behind a family that misses him deeply and cherishes the time they were given with him in his life.

He was preceded in death by his father, James Earl Buchanan; and his mother, Sarah Nell Buchanan.

Survivors include his wife, Anita Gail Buchanan of Northport; a daughter, Clarissa B. (Shane) Boggess of Tuscaloosa; a son, Matthew L. Buchanan of Tuscaloosa; and three grandchildren, Wolfgang Boggess, Lucas Boggess and Victor Edmondson of Tuscaloosa.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Heart Association.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
