CULLMAN — Blanche Larue Kohl

Blanche Larue Kohl passed away Friday, Feb. 22, 2013, at Tulane Hospital in New Orleans, La., only a brief distance from the four-generation family home she was born in on famed Esplanade Avenue in New Orleans. She married Jack Action Kohl in 1945 and lived for an extended period in Pensacola, Fla., before moving to Cullman in 1968. Jack and Blanche were Kentucky Fried Chicken franchisees for over 40 years starting with their first location on Main St. in Cullman.

Of Blanche’s many qualities, a staunch Auburn fan was one of her best. She was a strong contributor and active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Not only a long-term member of the church’s choir, she was involved with the Altar Society, Catholic Women’s Group, and provided great support to Sacred Heart School. She was also a large supporter of Sacred Heart Monastery and Saint Bernard Abby. For many years, Blanche was involved with the local Republican Women’s group and enjoyed lively conversation, especially concerning politics and sports. Bridge was her number one hobby, playing a few times each week for her entire life. A long-term resident of Larkwood subdivision, she was an active member of Larkwood Club and a frequent golfer at Terri Pines Country Club. She attended and hosted many social functions and could always be found on the dance floor if the music was playing.  Blanche had a life well lived.

With God being first, family was always her top priority. She was preceded in death by her husband of over 50 years, Jack Action Kohl. Also, her youngest brother, Bobbie (Fran) Larue preceded her death and she is survived by her brother, Maurice (Charlotte) Larue of Denver, Colo. She is survived by her three children, Larue (Jane) Kohl of Guntersville, Susan (Jim) Drake of Tuscaloosa, and Mimi (Kent) Weir of Cullman. Her six grandchildren include Kris (Naomi) Kohl of Silverdale, Wash., with great-grandchildren, Sofia and Nora, Melissa (Mark) Blackburn of Guntersville, with great-grandchildren, Rex and Merrin, Lea (Paul) Blackburn of New York, N.Y., and Kohl Weir, Allie Weir and Shelby Weir of Cullman.

Blanche’s visitation will be held at Moss-Service Funeral Home in Cullman at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013, followed by a Rosary at 7:30 p.m. A Requiem Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, March, 1, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Cullman followed by the Rite of Committal and Interment at Sacred Heart Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to: Sacred Heart School, 112 2nd Avenue SE, Cullman, AL 35055.
