CULLMAN — Anice Johnston Powell

Funeral services for Anice Johnston Powell will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013, at Cullman Heritage Funeral Home. She will be laid to rest at Bethel Methodist Church next to her husband, Joe, immediately following services.

Cullman Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Miss Anice joined her Lord and her Joe Saturday, Feb. 2. She was born Margaret Anice Elizabeth May 29, 1915, to Floyd Clifford and Mamie Johnston in Tarrant, Ala. She married Joel Carmen Powell of Cullman June 20, 1955, in Tupelo, Miss. The couple lived for years in Creve Coeur, Ill., until returning to Cullman on retirement.

Anice worked for Hawkins-Israel in Birmingham as a drapery maker and upholsterer. An expert seamstress, she made most of her clothing. Miss Anice enjoyed quilting and embroidery. A lifelong Methodist, she was very involved with her faith, leading devotions, Bible school, Sunday school and retreats. Miss Anice also sang in choirs and as a soloist. In her 90s, she became active in the Holly Pond Seniors Center.

She was predeceased by her parents; four brothers; three sisters; a nephew; and her Joe.

She is survived by her sister, Kathryn Hunt (Bourbonnais, Ill.); her nephews, Jerry Johnston (Las Vegas), Jim Lovell (Dahlonega, Ga.), David Johnston (Elijay, Ga), Ron Lovell (Pinson) and Kenneth Burnett (Hartselle); nieces, Anita McFarlin (Elijay, Ga.), Frankie Vernon (Decatur), Jane Powell (Decatur), Karen Williams (Elijay, Ga.), Karolyn Lambert (Bourbonnais, Ill.), Janice Logsdon (Coal City, Ill.), and Lynda Daviera (Bradley, Ill.);  and many, many great-nieces and nephews. She remained close to two of the 10 children she and Joe fostered: Rick Kuhl (St.Louis, Mo.) and Sandy Froman (Bloomington, Ill.). Miss Anice will be remembered by many friends in Alabama and Illinois.

Rather than flowers, Miss Anice would have requested donations to her favorites: Bethel Methodist, St. Jude's Childrens Hospital and Habitat for Humanity.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home Eva Road.
