Mrs. Barnett passed away Sunday, Jan. 20. She was born June 9, 1929, to Buford and Mae Yeager. She was a Sunday school teacher at Ebenezer Baptist Church, where she was a member for 52 years. Edna was a business education teacher at Wallace State Community College in Hanceville from 1966 until she retired. She was passionate about education and began teaching at WSCC only a couple of months after it opened in 1966. Although proud of the technical school at that time, Edna was part of a team led by Dr. James C. Bailey who had the desire for Wallace to become a community college. That team worked endlessly to get Wallace State accredited so they could also offer academic classes; thus, creating more opportunities for each of their students. Today, Wallace State Community College offers both technical and academic programs, and with technology, can reach students beyond our local community...to which this, and her family, made Edna most proud. She devoted her time to teaching others, encouraged everyone to pursue a degree, and believed that education was important.
She was preceded in death by her parents; adn her husband, Paul Barnett.
Survivors include her daughter, Becky (Jimmy) Floyd; three granddaughters, Shannon (Alan) Quick, Sherry (Paul) Chaney and Stefanie Floyd; four great-grandchildren, Taylor Quick, Tanner Quick, Eli Chaney and Zeke Chaney; a sister, Opal Pinkard; a sister-in-law, Marcella Yeager; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Tim Pinkard, Gene Pinkard, Bobby Collum, Zeb Reid and Paul Chaney.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
