Karen Jean Oliver Himes
Karen Jean Oliver Himes, recently retired and living in Mesa, Ariz., died Saturday, June 8, 2013, from lung cancer. She was 66. She died at her daughter’s home, surrounded by her family.
She was born June 1, 1947, in Chicago, Ill., to Hayes and Wilma Oliver. Her father was a Nazarene minister, and Karen grew up moving around the South, primarily Tennessee, and was well known for her Southern accent (her nickname was “Sadie”).
Karen was a beautiful woman. She was also a PK (preacher’s kid) and a child of the ’60s – a dangerous combination. The most important thing in her life was her children, and later grandchildren. Her 20s and 30s were tough, impoverished and even dangerous times. She made great personal sacrifices to protect and care for her children. She bore many battle scars and broken bones, but survived. She was a brave, humble woman and faced cancer the same way.
Her children are Mike (Patty) Best of Richmond, Ind.; K.C. (Danny) Shuford of Florida; Leslie (Dave) Daniels of Mesa, Ariz.; and Lisa (Josh) Warner of Arizona.
She was grandmother to 10, Lauren, Rebekah, Alex, Ryan, Ashley, Michael, Ben, Sam, Matthew and Lilliana.
She was sister to Sandy Heatherly (Oliver) of Hartselle, Ala.; and loved her nephew, Nick (and Marilyn) Heatherly; and her great-nephew, Hayes; and great-niece, Eve, all of Hartselle.
Her mother and father preceded her in death. Her beloved feline companion of 15 years, Maggie (the meanest cat one could ever meet), as well.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, July 12, 2013, in Cullman, at Cullman Heritage Funeral Home. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. prior to services.
