CULLMAN — William ‘Ray’ Hamrick

Funeral services for William “Ray” Hamrick of Huntsville will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2012, at Laughlin Service Funeral Home Chapel.

Laughlin Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hamrick passed away Sunday, Oct. 7, at Huntsville Hospital, after a brief illness.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Eleonora Hamrick; a son, Glen Hamrick of Chicago; a daughter, Joan (Walt) Hennessee of Huntsville; a brother, Bert Hamrick; and a sister, Gladys Waldrop of Birmingham.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Huntsville Chapter 260 of Mended Hearts.

Born in Blountsville, Ray grew up on the Hamrick family farm in Cullman. He served in the Merchant Marines during World War II, and saw action on his vessel delivering troops on D-Day. After the war, Ray returned home, married his high school sweetheart, Eleonora, and went to work for A&P Food Company. He worked in various towns, moving to Huntsville in 1958 to serve as manager of the A&P store on Green Street in downtown Huntsville. In 1966, he became a food broker serving North Alabama until retirement. It was after “retiring” that Ray really got busy. He had heart surgery on the day of his retirement, and shortly thereafter began to volunteer for the “Mended Hearts”. He made over 7,560 recorded visits in 24 years, encouraging patients and their families who were awaiting heart surgery.

Ray was a man of great faith, loved the Lord, and the family rejoices he has gone to be with his Heavenly Father.

Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday, just prior to services at the funeral home (www.laughlinservice.com).
