Thomas Marion Mingus

CULLMAN — Thomas Marion Mingus, Jr., 76, died surrounded by his loving family on February 19, 2014. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at 11 a.m. at the Cathedral of St. Paul in Birmingham, Ala.

Mr. Mingus was preceded in death by his parents Thomas Marion Mingus and Claire Woolsey Mingusa; a sister, Shirley Mingus Bryars; and a brother, Robert Wayne Mingus.

He is survived by his wife, Kay Frances Bertagnolli Mingus; a son, Thomas Marion Mingus, III (Cynthia); Kelleigh Mingus Taylor (Bruce), Krista Mingus Rataj (Peter); seven grandchildren, Carlin Taylor, Ryan Taylor, Michael Mingus, Carson Taylor, Alexander Mingus, Sophia Rataj and Francis Rataj; brothers, Richard Alan Mingus (Fran), Gary Michael Mingus; sisters, Pam Kelly (Joe) and Marsha Russell (Herb); his sister-in-law, Constance Harbison (Dick), as well as many wonderful nieces, nephews and cousins.

Tom was born in Mobile, AL on September 10, 1937. He graduated from McGill-Toolen Catholic High School in Mobile in 1955. He married Kay Frances Bertagnolli on May 2, 1959 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Mobile. Tom worked for Bell South in Mobile, Opelika and Montgomery. He retired in 1987 after 31 1/2 years of service. His twenty-six years in retirement were spent at Lake Martin and then in Cullman, Ala. serving his family, friends and Church. Tom was diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis in 2005. He underwent a double-lung transplant at Duke University Hospital in 2010; and enjoyed several more years of life. The Mingus family is truly grateful for all of the care he received at Duke University Hospital in Durham, NC and Baptist Princeton Hospital in Birmingham, Ala. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to: McGill-Toolen Catholic High School, Mobile; Sacred Heart Catholic School, Cullman; St. Bernard Preparatory School, Cullman; St. Rose Academy,Birmingham; Baptist Princeton Hospital, Birmingham.

    Carlton Eugene Stafford, 82, of Cullman passed away Saturday, July 26, 2014, at Cullman Regional Medical Center. He was born April 14, 1932, James and Mary Katherine Brown Stafford. Mr. Stafford was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War. He was the original owner of Carlton’s restaurant.
